Barrier grid animation

Barrier-grid animation (also known as "picket fence" animation and often referred to by the genericized trademark "Scanimation"), is an animation effect created by moving a striped acetate overlay across an interlaced image.
==Ombro Cinema==

An early implementation of the effect is seen in a variety of French ''Ombro Cinema ''toys from the early 1900s (''Ombro Cinema'' refers to a specific barrier-grid animation technique and sometimes to the toys themselves, which were also branded as ''Ciné enfantin''). ''Ombro Cinema'' toys operated on scrolls of sequences of images printed as interlaced two-frame animations: thin vertical bands of one frame of the animation were alternated with bands of the next frame. ''Ombro Cinema'' toys consisted of a wooden or cardboard chasis, a viewing pane interrupted by regularly-spaced black vertical bands (sometimes disguised in an image of a picket fence), and a rack and hand-crank for cycling the image scroll across the viewing pane.
When the scroll was cycled across the banded viewing pane, the bands would conceal the first frame of the animation while revealing the second and vice-vera, producing an illusion of movement by persistence of vision. In some ''Ombro Cinema'' toys, by placing the scroll in the device and turning the crank, the user could watch a parade of animated figures "pass across a fence". In others, the scroll contained a narrative sequence of moving images that was progressed by turning the crank. The images in these toys were often silhouetted so that they would appear more clearly, hence ''Ombro Cinema'', meaning, "shadow theatre".
